Raising the Standard - restoration of tramcar No.143

Project Description

To restore and raise local awareness of a 1924 Blackpool Corporation tram, bringing it back to operational condition; and to facilitate operation on the Blackpool tramway once work is complete, demonstrating the transport of yesteryear. Once restored, Blackpool Transport will operate the tram on the tramway.

Community engagement is an important part of the project and will include a series of hands-on workshop sessions to learn restoration techniques, open days and reminiscence sessions to capture memories of people using the trams when they were still in service and those of people who worked on them. Local College students will work on a tram related art project, which will feed into an exhibition, displays in the tram and the development of a booklet about the project. An e-book will also be developed, as well as regular project updates on this web site.

The project is scheduled to start in November 2005 funded by the Local Heritage Initiative - a national grant and advice scheme, devised and run by The Countryside Agency on behalf of the Heritage Lottery Fund and supported by the Nationwide Building Society.
