Western KL2466

Leyland Leopard No. 2466 was supplied new to Western SMT in June 1974, one of a batch of 40 vehicles. These Leopards operated long distance services, and could be found on Glasgow to London duplication, in addition to being the mainstay of the Glasgow – Lancashire services operated jointly with Ribble Motor Services.

On summer weekends, as many as ten coaches would leave Blackpool carrying returning Glaswegian holiday makers to back home after a visit to the resort. Undoubtedly No. 2466 would have performed on the Blackpool – Glasgow service may times during its career with Western.

For most of its time with Western, No. 2466 was based at Kilmarnock garage, adjacent to the company’s head office. Subsequently it was based at Inchinnan and Carlisle, and in the spring of 1977 lost its black and white coach livery, and received the red and white bus livery. In 1983, No. 2466 was sold to Northern Scottish, and received Northern yellow and cream livery, applied at the Western central works in Kilmarnock before its departure.

In 1989, No. 2466 was sold to Scarlet Band, West Cornforth in County Durham. With this operator its 49 dual-purpose seats were replaced by 53 of the bus variety for school service. A red, white and yellow livery was applied. Later, in August 1999, No. 2466 was acquired for preservation by a County Durham enthusiast, and cosmetically restored to the black and white coach livery. A set of dual-purpose seats was fitted at the same time. It was then acquired by a Scottish preservationist, and was kept at the Scottish Vintage Vehicle Society premises at Lathalmond, and then the Glasgow Bus Museum at Bridgeton, Glasgow.

In 2003, No. 2466 joined the Lancastrian Transport Trust collection, as an example of the type of long distance coach that worked into Blackpool from Scotland. It remains privately owned, but on long-term loan to LTT. Extensive restoration commenced early in 2004 and the coach made its debut at the Ribble express running-day event in October 2004 restored to Express black and white livery.
